God ettermiddag

Moving to a less capital intensive
strategy
Northland Resources (NAUR) is changing strategy to lower its
funding requirement following the softer economic climate. We
estimate a close to 50% reduction in capex which should lower
the funding risk. Valuation points to a substantial upside. BUY -
TP NOK 14. (Note - transferring coverage)
Growing juniors – heavily geared towards a recovery
Growing junior iron ore companies have seen their share price drop as
the credit crisis crippled industrial production and the overall financial
market. There are signs that we are nearing a recovery, and hence we
believe it could be beneficial to invest in these companies at this
stage.
A step change in strategy – lowers capex by ~ 50%
NAUR’s management has communicated for some months that they
will follow a less capital intensive strategy due the current economic
climate. This includes developing a centralized processing facility in
the Kaunisvaara district that can process ore from nearby deposits.
Additionally, the company targets to produce pellet feed as opposed to
pellets. We estimate a reduced capex requirement of close to 50%.
Funding
Northland has a good cash balance (Q1’09e ~ CADm 85), that we
believe will take them through bankable studies and fund working
capital. The Kaunisvaara capex requirement needs to be funded
through external sources. We have assumed some equipment leasing,
project finance and/or off-take financing.
Capital intensity of projects and relative valuation
Compared to similar projects, we find that Northland’s projects have
highly competitive capital intensity ratios. Additionally, on a relative
valuation basis, the company seems to have appealing ratios.
Valuation points to a significant upside
Our SOTP/DCF valuation points to a significant upside for the stock.
We estimate an unrisked and risked value of NOK 30 and NOK
14/share, respectively. BUY – TP 14/share.
The recommendation was not presented to the issuer before
dissemination.
