tandy Posted august 15, 2005 Report Share Posted august 15, 2005 CMS looks for partners in vertical market shift Distributor realigns operations and looks for vendors to help move closer to specific new markets James Sherwood, CRN 15 Aug 2005 ADVERTISEMENTStorage distributor CMS Peripherals is realigning its operations to move closer to specific vertical markets and is looking at signing new vendors to help it achieve its aim. Astley Gayle, newly appointed product marketing manager at CMS Peripherals, said the realignment will be centred on three new elements: digital consumer, digital office and digital enterprise. He added that the move will be a “fundamental market shift” for the company. “There is not a do-nothing option for us. We can’t continue as we are. We have to adapt and change, move forward and add more value, as opposed to simply being in fulfilment,” he said. CMS has also identified the public sector as a potential growth opportunity for storage sales. Astley claimed the growth is partly driven by the implications of data compliance regulations in the sector. “Over the years our strategy has become reactive and demand-driven. It has served us well, but now we have to change. We need to become much more proactive and driven by market intelligence,” he said. The distributor already partners with several established vendors, including Hewlett-Packard, Computer Associates and Tandberg Data. CMS has identified several new vendors, including two in Silicon Valley and one in Israel, in the storage infrastructure and appliances sector. Mark Blowers, senior analyst at the Butler Group, said vertical specialisation allows a business to narrow its focus down to its core strengths. “This is the trend in the IT and storage markets. Many storage distributors are looking to add expertise in a select number of areas, rather than distribute across the board,” he said. james_sherwood@vnu.co.uk http://www.vnunet.com/crn/news/2141123/cms...rtners-vertical
tandy Posted august 18, 2005 Report Share Posted august 18, 2005 AFX News Limited Tandberg Data Q2 opg swings to loss on shift to LTO technology 08.18.2005, 04:30 AM OSLO (AFX) - Tandberg Data ASA said it swung to a second quarter operating loss on the back of a shift towards Linear Tape-Open (LTO) technology that hits its sales and margins. It posted an operating loss of 1.964 mln usd compared with a profit of 130,000 usd a year earlier. Sales fell to 24.0 mln usd from 26.5 mln as volume and the gross margin have been adversely affected by strong competition in Europe - particularly in Germany -- during the quarter. The net loss came to 2.279 mln usd compared with a profit of 398,000 usd a year earlier. Looking ahead, Tandberg Data said the newly signed strategic agreement with Advanced Digital Information Corp (ADIC) shows that the repositioning of the technology and products over the past two years are beginning to pay off. It added, though, that the agreement is not expected to have any significant effect on sales and gross profit this year. Tandberg Data said the shift to LTO technology, which is supported by the major original equipment manufactures as International Business Machines Corp and Hewlett-Packard Co, is continuing to gain market share from other technologies. This is creating substantial pressure on volumes and prices of other technologies. This is adding to the effects of a slow economy in Europe, Tandberg Data's largest market. This situation is expected to have a negative impact on Tandberg Data in the short term, which will last until its new products have achieved sales volume offsetting the declining volumes on the DLT (Digital Linear Tape) and SLR (Scalable Linear Recording) products. tandy Posted august 22, 2005 Report Share Posted august 22, 2005 Techworld August 22, 05 http://www.techworld.com/storage/features/...age=1&pagePos=2 Could ADIC be Overland's white knight? Buys around 10 percent of Overland's shares By Chris Mellor ADIC has bought around ten percent of the shares in Overland Storage according to Overland's SEC filings. ADIC met with Overland officials in January to discuss the futures of the two businesses and signed confidentiality agreements to do with potential transactions. Now ADIC has spent almost ten million dollars to buy 1.3 million shares and so-informed Overland CEO Chris Calisi. A joining together of Overland and ADIC was mentioned at this meeting. The timing is significant in that the purchase took place just after news became public about the loss of HP's future OEM business from Overland. This was followed by the purchase of Zetta Systems, signaling the move into protecting primary data storage. ADIC may not have known the full story of Overland's loss-making results and forecast of a loss in 2006 - ADIC has just announced profitable results - but it certainly knows now. With the previous January meeting it's probably feasible to consider that Overland has been pretty open with ADIC about its woes. ADIC and Overland products overlap in the SME space. Both companies have disk-to-disk backup products, with ADIC's probably being the more sophisticated product. If both companies agree that there is over-capacity in the tape storage product business then a merger or acquisition would help remedy that. It seems obvious that ADIC would be the senior member of any joined entity. In public Calisi has been talking up Overland, mentioning competing with NetApp. It's easy to talk about such things, but far harder to compete with NetApp outside the small enterprise space. Also Overland's primary disk protection products are not even on the streets yet and we await further illumination on its primary disk strategy. The influence of Sun's purchase of StorageTek may pervade ADIC and Overland discussions. All three tape companies know that software is playing an increasingly strong role in data protection and this represents an opportunity to loosen the lock on data protection held by the backup software vendors. ADIC has a more solid penetration of medium and larger enterprises. Overland could represent an opportunity in the SME space and a second opportunity in the primary data protection area. It also has its channel partners and OEM relationships. A better-run Overland could increase its profit margin. A joined-together ADIC-Overland could also eliminate some product-related costs. If ADIC does join with Overland then life will get harder for Quantum, Qualstar, SpectraLogic, Tandberg, Breece Hill and others. Such a move could trigger more consolidation in the tape storage industry.

tandy Posted september 26, 2005 Report Share Posted september 26, 2005 Westan Loads up on storage Julia Talevski, ARN 27/09/2005 07:27:04 Storage tape specialist, Tandberg Data, has selected Westan as the latest local distributor for its StorageLoader LTO range. Westan product manager of server and storage division, Geoff Bull, said the products were complementary to its own range of Armaserve servers. He said its Tandberg partnership was expected to generate good revenues for resellers operating in the SMB or corporate space. Westan will offer product training and is also conducting product road shows throughout Australia during October that will include the new LTO products range. Tandberg business development manager, Georg Schlueter, said the company chose Westan because it was capable of penetrating its target SMB, SME and OEM markets. "Westan is the right partner to help increase our sales revenue and reseller base," Schlueter said. "It is located in every state and we want to have good representation bases in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia." Westan joins ACA Pacific and T Data in the Tandberg stable. Schlueter said Westan's whitebox focus would bring the vendor a different customer base to its other distributors. Tandberg has revamped its partner program with more specials and benefits in a bid to include more resellers. It has also extended its 1U 1.6/3.2TB capacity Storageloader promotion for resellers until the end of December, which offers eight LTO2 cartridges and one LTO cleaning cartridge free with every purchase. tandy Posted september 30, 2005 Report Share Posted september 30, 2005 TAD - OUTLOOK Q4 2005 - STRONG BUSINESS GROWTH 29.09.2005 16:11 The today announced commencement of shipment of half-height LTO2 tape drives to DELL Inc. in combination with the previously announced OEM contracts and Tandberg Data`s new product offerings in the global reseller channel, is expected to generate substantial growth in the fourth quarter this year. Further, Tandberg Data has entered into a new OEM contract with a Japanese customer on the half-height LTO2 tape drive which will add an estimated annual revenue of USD 5 - 6 million. A full disclosure will be announced when shipments have started. Under reference to the above Tandberg Data wants to make a forward looking statement for the fourth quarter 2005 which is contained herein. The above stated positive events are expected to generate a stronger growth in the fourth quarter this year than previously anticipated. The positive trend is expected to continue on a quarter by quarter basis thereafter, as volumes will increase both on the OEM contracts and in the channel business. As previously announced, Advanced Digital International Corporation (ADIC) and Tandberg Data will supply products to each other under the strategic agreement which was entered into early August. The agreement implies that the parties will resell the products under each company`s brand in its global reseller channel and on product offerings to the OEM customers. The qualification of these products progress according to plan and launching will take place the fourth quarter this year. Tandberg Data estimates the value of the agreement to be USD 60 - 100 million in revenue over the next 3 years, beginning at the end of 2005. Volume shipments to IBM of the half-height LTO2 tape drive is building up month by month, and the fourth quarter will be the first full quarter with shipments. The European sales operation has been through an extensive restructuring during the third quarter and a more customer focused team with short decision lines have been established to enable us to more successfully respond to a more dynamic market situation. The third quarter 2005 will not be significantly affected by the above described development and revenue and EBIT in the third quarter are expected to be in line with the second quarter. In order to meet the increasing demand for its products the Board of Tandberg Data is considering to strengthen the company`s capital base. Consequently, the company has retained Carnegie and Handelsbanken Capital Markets to advise on a potential equity issue.

tandy Posted november 7, 2005 Report Share Posted november 7, 2005 Hammer signs Maxtor and drops Tandberg Storage firm agrees distribution deal with Maxtor and drops Tandberg to focus on Quantum relationship James Sherwood, CRN 07 Nov 2005 ADVERTISEMENTStorage distributor Hammer has signed a UK distribution agreement with hard drive vendor Maxtor, but has dropped Tandberg Data as part of its vendor line up. Under the terms of the Maxtor deal, Hammer will distribute the vendor’s full range of disk storage products, such as its 15K II SCSI drive, to the enterprise, SME and industrial consumer electronics sectors, as well as associated services. James Ward, managing director of Hammer, said: “Disk is experiencing a huge growth and partnering with Maxtor will help us to take advantage of the expanding market.” Storage capacity growth overtook revenue growth in disk storage systems by 49.4 per cent to 457 petabytes during the second quarter of this year, according to IDC (CRN, 12 September). Didier Trassaert, vice president of Maxtor EMEA, said: “Hammer will help us drive strong sales growth in the UK storage market. Its proactive approach to business development makes it the ideal storage partner.” Astley Gayle, product marketing manager for UK and Ireland at rival Maxtor distributor CMS Peripherals, said he was surprised by the move. “The million dollar question with this arrangement is whether there is enough demand in the market place. Also whether or not Maxtor is already over-or under-distributed. I’m just not sure if the demand is there,” he said. “There could be two outcomes to this appointment; it could dilute Maxtor’s capabilities, or leave some interesting pricing dynamics.” Ward said its partnership with Maxtor also comes at the same time as a reduction in its tape vendor collaborations. “We have decided to no longer distribute Tandberg Data as its product range has too many similarities with Quantum, which we still distribute. We felt distributing products from both vendors was diluting our focus somewhat so we decided to focus on just one of the vendors,” he added. Separately, Maxtor reported a $1m drop in turnover to $927m for its third quarter, compared to the same quarter last year. The vendor also reported a $17m net loss for the third quarter ended 1 October 2005, which it said included a $4.2m payment in severance expenses following its recent Singapore workforce reduction. Gross profit margin also dropped by 2.1 per cent to 11.1 per cent in Q3, compared to the previous quarter, however its drive shipment level for consumer electronics OEMs increased by 74,000 drives to 1,139,000 during the quarter. tandy Posted juni 15, 2006 Report Share Posted juni 15, 2006 From BREAKING NEWS! Tandberg To Ship 1U Autoloader With Half-Height LTO-1 By Joseph F. Kovar, CRN 3:17 PM EDT to. jun. 15, 2006 Tandberg Data has taken advantage of its recently unveiled half-height LTO-1 tape drive to develop one of the industry's lowest-cost LTO-based tape autoloaders. The new StorageLoader LTO-1, which Tandberg plans to release to the channel next week, offers a maximum capacity of 800 Gbytes native, or 1.6 Tbytes compressed, in a 1U rack-mount footprint, said Ken Cruden, vice president and general manager for the Poway, Calif.-based vendor. The native data transfer rate is 32 Mbytes per second. Tandberg is targeting the StorageLoader LTO-1 at small businesses that may be using AIT or DAT tape formats but may be interested in LTO technology, according to Cruden. "Customers like LTO but feel it's too expensive," he said. "That's what caused us to come out with our half-height LTO-1 drive." Greg Knieriemen, vice president of marketing at Chi, a Cleveland-based solution provider, said Tandberg has been doing a great job with autoloaders. The market is definitely ready for such a high-density tape autoloader like the new StorageLoader LTO-1, but it won't go only to small businesses, he noted. "This creeps into the lower end of the midmarket," Knieriemen said. "A lot depends on users' configurations." Though many 1U or 2U autoloaders use a revolving carousel to load tape cartridges, the StorageLoader LTO-1 uses two removable, four-tape magazines for simplicity, Cruden said. It also includes a bar-code reader for cataloging cartridges. Designed with serviceability in mind, the autoloader features field-replaceable power supplies, fans, drives and air filters, Cruden said. It also can be upgraded with other half-height LTO tape drives, including Tandberg's half-height LTO-2 drive, introduced a year ago, and its upcoming half-height LTO-3 drive, expected to be released in a year, he said. The list price for the StorageLoader LTO-1 is less than $3,000, and its street price is expected to be as low as $2,300, Cruden said. http://www.crn.com/sections/breakingnews/d...cleId=189401505

tandy Posted juli 11, 2006 Report Share Posted juli 11, 2006 Tandberg Data StorageLibrary T128 combines Modular Design With Continuous RoboticsPublished 10th July 2006 New tape library solution provides growing mid-range storage environments with scalable, easy and reliable data protection with a performance up to 3.5 TB/h and storage capacity of 102.4TB... Oslo, Norway 10th July 2006 Tandberg Data ASA, the only European data storage company that designs, develops and manufactures tape drives, tape automation and disk sub systems, today announces the Tandberg StorageLibrary T128 library, which delivers the scalability and modular design that today¹s exponentially growing data environments demand. Developed to serve the mid-range market, the StorageLibrary T128¹s superior design and scalability offers a high capacity, flexible and modular solution. All too frequently, organisations struggle to accurately predict data growth volumes; access and retrieval requirements; the effects of retention policies and storage consolidation, so initial capital investment can be threatened from the outset. With this in mind, Tandberg Data has set out to provide a future-proof expansion solution that allows users to easily increase their storage infrastructure as their data grows, enabling them to invest and grow capacity according to business requirement and budgets. The StorageLibrary T128 features capacity-on-demand (COD), modular design and easy-to-use management and diagnostic tools through an enhanced local and remote user interface. The Tandberg StorageLibrary T128 has been developed for the mid-range market, and its modular design and expandability enable this system to truly accommodate a more sophisticated level of storage capability, says Carl Waadeland, product manager, automation solutions at Tandberg Data. ³For example, it takes approximately 30 minutes for the customer to expand the unit from 5U to 14U. Gudmundur Einarsson, CEO at Tandberg Data, further elaborates, 'We¹ve listened to the LTO market drivers and responded with the introduction of the Tandberg StorageLibrary T128 to allow mid-range storage environments faster, easier and more reliable data protection up to 102.4TB.' Tandberg Data¹s new StorageLibrary T128 further expands its LTO based solutions portfolio. 'We are seeing LTO technology largely governing the demand for mid-range tape automation autoloaders and libraries,² commented Ray Stewart, sales director at EACS, Tandberg Data Platinum Partner. 'The T128 is a natural extension of the Tandberg portfolio, adding weight and versatility, so that accredited partners like ourselves can penetrate this market. The StorageLibrary T128 will be invaluable to the mid-range library space, not just through its flexibility but also through its innovative user-interface and built-in diagnostics. The product allows for easy installation, configuration, maintenance and monitoring of devices and offers up to 128 slots for tapes. I/E Mail slots can be configured to allow 6, 12 or 18 tapes for single and bulk loading and you can install up to 6 SCSI or Fibre Channel (NF) LTO3 tape drives. The new library also provides Reliability-Availability-Serviceability (RAS) tickets when a problem is detected. Using advanced problem detection, reporting and notification technology, the StorageLibrary T128 performs numerous self-tests to monitor the system¹s temperature, power consumption and standard operational functions. These are run each time it is powered on and also during normal operation. Users can be alerted to defects through LED activity, email, a Tandberg Data screen saver indicator or Web client. Email notifications can be enabled for up to 10 users or sent automatically to Tandberg Data for investigation directly from the system. The Tandberg StorageLibrary T128 is scalable from 28TB to 102.4TB. It also offers customers a system that is fast to upgrade and service, ensuring short maintenance downtime and system restoration. The product has a MTTR (Mean Time To Repair) of less than 30 minutes. The Tandberg StorageLibrary 128 is supported by all major backup application and operating systems and is available from 28th July throughout Tandberg Data¹s qualified reseller partner base. vidar Posted august 30, 2006 Report Share Posted august 30, 2006 TAD(NY):USD -9,0M F. SKATT I 2.KV 2006 (-2,1) (Oppdatert med tre siste avsnitt) Oslo (TDN Finans): Tandberg Data fikk et resultat før skatt på -9,0 millioner dollar i andre kvartal 2006, sammenlignet med -2,1 millioner dollar i samme periode året før.
