Tandberg Storage Passes LTO Ultrium Format Generation 2 Mechanism Compliance

SILICON VALLEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2005--Certance, HP, and IBM Corporation, the Technology Provider Companies (TPCs) for the Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Program, today announced that Tandberg Storage has passed compliance test requirements for its tape drives based on the LTO Ultrium format generation 2, making Tandberg the fourth manufacturer of LTO Ultrium tape drives.

"A key premise for the creation of the LTO Program was to provide an open forum in which any company could license and manufacture tape products based on the LTO Ultrium specification, and Tandberg Storage is another crowning example of the customer benefits provided by open-standards -- multiple suppliers, unique feature sets, and interchangeability among competing LTO manufacturers," said Barry Rudolph, Vice President, Tape Storage Systems, IBM.

"Since LTO technology continues to increase its share of tape sales, the timing was right for Tandberg Storage to offer an LTO Ultrium format generation 2 tape drive to the small and medium size business segment," said Erik Solhjell, CEO of Tandberg Storage. "After an arduous and thorough testing process, it is a momentous occasion to pass compliance verification by the LTO Program."

In adherence to its compliance testing, the LTO Program requires that all licensees pass a series of compliance verification tests, which include rigorous data interchangeability testing before being issued a license to sell and the right to display the trusted LTO Ultrium trademark. Compliance testing of all Ultrium tape products must be completed annually to ensure that each manufacturer adheres to the LTO Ultrium format specifications. Buyers seeking true Ultrium format-compliant products should look for the LTO Ultrium format compliance verification trademarks on both tape drives and data cartridges.

The LTO Program has issued its specification for the LTO Ultrium format generation 3, LTO WORM, and recently announced an extended roadmap to the sixth generation.

LTO Ultrium format generation 3

The LTO Ultrium format generation 3 doubles physical storage capacity over generation 2, increasing to 800 GB from 400 GB (assuming a 2:1 compression). Transfer rates in generation 3 improve to up to 160 MB per second (MB/s) from 80 MB/s in generation 2 (assuming a 2:1 compression) allowing for up to 576 TB of backup performance per hour. The LTO Ultrium format generation 3 drives also offer backwards-compatible read-and-write capability with the Ultrium format generation 2 cartridges and backward read capability with generation 1 cartridges, helping to protect the investment customers have made in LTO technology.

LTO WORM

The LTO Program WORM implementation is designed to provide users with a very cost effective means of storing data in a non-rewriteable format to help address compliance regulations.

Robust algorithms using the Cartridge Memory (CM), in conjunction with low level encoding that is mastered on the tape media at the time of manufacture, are designed to prevent tampering. The LTO Ultrium format generation 3 specification includes the ability for WORM enabled and non-WORM enabled drives to co-exist. In addition, appending data at the end of a WORM cartridge which was previously written to is supported, thus allowing customers to take full advantage of the high capacity tape media.

Updated LTO Ultrium Roadmap

LTO Ultrium Generation 5

The LTO Ultrium format generation 5 is planned to double physical storage capacity over generation 4, increasing to 3.2 TB compressed (assuming a 2:1 compression). Transfer rates in generation 5 are planned to improve to up to 360 MB per second (MB/s) (assuming a 2:1 compression).

LTO Ultrium Generation 6

The LTO Ultrium format generation 6 is planned to double physical storage capacity over generation 5, increasing to 6.4 TB (assuming a 2:1 compression). Transfer rates in generation 6 are planned to improve to up to 540 MB/s (assuming a 2:1 compression).

The complete roadmap can be found at http://www.ultrium.com/newsite/html/format_roadmap.html.

How to License LTO Ultrium Technology

The LTO program offers several different license packages - from enhanced packages that provide the specifications and licenses to manufacture Ultrium products, to basic packages, providing Ultrium format specifications and guidelines for interchangeability.

Buyers seeking Ultrium format-compliant products should look for the Ultrium format compliance verification trademarks on both tape drives and data cartridges. Storage and media manufacturers interested in licensing LTO technology may obtain information by contacting the Law Offices of Ladas & Parry at (323) 934-2300, or by e-mail at LTO_INFO@ladasparry.com.

About Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Technology

LTO technology is a powerful, scalable, adaptable open tape format created by technology providers Certance (now part of Quantum), HP, and IBM Corporation to help meet the growing demands of data protection in the midrange to enterprise-class server environments.

Tandberg Data’s Partners wooed with cash rebates

Kate Palmer, Auckland

Resellers who sign up to Tandberg Data’s revamped partner programme are being promised increased support and cash benefits.

The storage tape specialist wants to increase sales in the APAC region by 25% through the new-look Tandberg Special Storage Partner programme.

Marketing and communication executive Venus Ang says the idea is to create a unique programme with attractive benefits to members.

Ang says feedback from existing partners has led to changes to better address partner needs.

Georg Schlueter, business development manager ANZ, says the original programme — established in 1998 — never ran well in the region.

“Now customers can join the programme for twelve months with no sales commitment. Tandberg is trying to help them push the brand,” he says.

Schlueter was recently appointed to the Sydney-based position in a bid to grow sales in the ANZ market.

The programme offers three classes of partner: ordinary, gold and platinum.

Depending on the category resellers receive priority status for qualified leads, marketing development funds and rebates.

Tandberg says it is also looking to recruit resellers to increase sales in the SME market and to that effect Schleuter is working with New Zealand distributors T Data and Ingram Micro.

Membership will be reviewed annually and automatically renewed or promoted to the next category of partner.

“We will sit down with our partners and discuss how we can help them achieve their goals,” says Schleuter.

By Ankita Pandey, Rachita Vaid

Mumbai, Apr 15, 2005

Tandberg Data, manufacturer of tape information storage products, has launched its half-height LTO Ultrium 2 tape drive in the Indian market.

Gudmundur Einarsson, CEO, Tandberg Data ASA, said, "The recent industry trend highlights that the mid-range and mid-performance segments are the major growth areas in the storage space. There is a fast-growing demand for disk-based storage solutions for protection of data. Our products have been globally recognized for high performance, and we expect the same response for our new product."

The Tandberg 420LTO has a capacity of up to 400GB and a transfer rate of up to 48MB/s inside a space-saving 5 " inch half-height design. According to the company, it also features the best cost per gigabyte ratio and lowest power consumption as compared to any LTO Ultrium format drive in the market.

Ashok Kumar, sales director, South and West Asia, Tandberg Data, said, "In India we have been very successful with our SLR range of products. Our USP in the Indian market is our product s low power consumption of 18 watts. In addition, the important thing is that we have a broad product portfolio and make products for every segment in the market. The 420LTO is fully compliant to the LTO industry standard."

Tandberg has a two-tier channel network in India. It has three national distributors in Ingram Micro, SES Technologies and Select Technologies.

On the company s channel strategies, Kumar said, "We have appointed Ingram Micro for the broadband space, SES Technologies looks after the B and C class cities, while Select Technologies focuses on solutions. We have 600 qualified, storage-focused channel partners in the country. The channel is our limbs and one of the most important parts of our business strategies.

We are revitalizing the channel in the B and C class cities and have ongoing training programs and other pre-sales activities to build a strong network. Recently, we conducted a four-city roadshow in Kolkata, New Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. The roadshows, which were targeted at the resellers, concluded today in Mumbai. Tandberg expands storage channel in more aggressive North American push

21 April, 2005

by Mark Cox

Tandberg Data, through its InoStor Corp. wholly-owned subsidiary, is beefing up its presence in North America though the expansion of its existing partnership with distributor Condre Storage Inc. to include LTO tape drives and tape automation product lines.

Tandberg has historically used InoStor, of which it owned 55 per cent, for its North American distribution. Two months ago, however, Tandberg bought the rest of InoStor, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary, and since then has embarked on an aggressive campaign to broaden and deepen its channel. It signed a distribution agreement with TigerDirect. Now it is extending its relationship with Condre. Condre previously distributed Tandberg's NAS solutions. Now LTO tape drives and tape automation product lines have been added to the available offerings. And looking forward, Tandberg/InoStor will announce other significant distribution deals.

"This agreement enables Condre Storage to broaden our reach into the midrange reseller and systems integrator communities in North America as mainstream LTO tape technology moves from the enterprise into the SMB," said Dennis Maetzold, president of Condre Storage Inc. "Since Tandberg's tape automation and NAS product lines complement each other, it positions us to immediately benefit our VAR and system builder partners. In addition, our flexible business terms and sales and support expertise provides a vendor resource for resellers not currently offered by other distributors in the storage arena."

This extended relationship positions Condre to take advantage of Tandberg's extensive experience in the storage industry, offering midrange and enterprise solutions, for the immediate benefit of their VAR and System Builder partners," said Ken Cruden, InoStor's COO. "We are very excited about combining our strong product offerings with Condre's comprehensive channel programs."

Tandberg's recently added LTO-based tape drive solutions to its offerings, and features the 420LTO, which it bills as the most compact and fastest LTO-2 half-height drive in the industry.

TAD skuffer !

Omstillingen tregere enn ventet

Denne prosessen vil fortsette for fullt i andre kvartal.

Fortsatt tøft for Tandberg Data

Teknologiskiftet innebærer at LTO-teknologien fortsetter å vinne markedsandeler, innenfor båndstasjonsmarkedet.

Nedoverbakke i usa for øyeblikket da. Så ser ikke helt bra ut kortsiktig. Så da blir jeg vel sittende over helga i alle fall :)

Tandberg Data Half-Height LTO-2 Tape Drive Selected by Systemax for Server Solutions

POWAY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2005--Tandberg Data Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Tandberg Data ASA (OSE:TAD), and Systemax Inc. (NYSE:SYX), a direct marketer of brand-name and private-label products, announced today that Systemax is integrating the Tandberg 420LTO half-height LTO-2 tape drives into its Entry Level System (ELS), Small Office (SO) and AMD Opteron series of servers.

Systemax targets mid-range and major corporate accounts as well as small office/home office (SOHO) markets for its server products. The company determined it would offer tape backup as a standard option because many of their customers were looking for complete server/backup solutions to protect mission-critical data and to meet state and federal regulations regarding data protection and retention.

"We evaluated several companies and selected Tandberg Data as our tape partner," stated Skip Murray, OEM server marketing manager of Systemax. "We wanted LTO tape technology because of its flexibility, performance and reliability, and Tandberg Data is one of the few companies licensed to sell the technology. They became very involved during the qualification process and offered the product we wanted at a good price. Tandberg's excellent service and support and their over 25 years designing and manufacturing tape-based backup solutions influenced our final decision to choose their product."

According to Murray, another factor in choosing Tandberg Data was the location of the drive's mounting holes. "The 420LTO had holes in the right locations to fit our servers, which made them easy to mount. Competitive units required extra work and the fit wasn't as good. As is so often the case, it's all in the details," he noted.

"Systemax has a strong presence in North America and Europe," said Ken Cruden, Tandberg Data COO. "Their excellent line of products, combined with a growing distribution network, will help us reach new users. I'm especially proud they selected Tandberg Data as their tape drive partner for their server division."

The Tandberg 420LTO is the industry's most compact half-height LTO Ultrium 2 tape drive. It backs up 200GB (native capacity) at an extremely fast 24MB/s (native) inside a space-saving 5.25-inch half-height design. It also features the best cost-per-gigabyte ratio and lowest power consumption of any LTO Ultrium format drive on the market.

Tandberg's half-height LTO-2 drive is the first generation of Tandberg Data's planned five-generation roadmap of low-cost half-height LTO technology offering users backward compatibility and scalability to the Tandberg StorageLoader LTO2 autoloader that features 3.2 terabytes compressed capacity in a sleek 1U form factor. It is targeted at the SMB market segment where data protection requirements continue to grow exponentially.
